John Michael "Mike" Drake, age 74, died unexpectedly in a one-vehicle accident on Sunday, May 6. Mr. Drake left two daughters, Susan Michelle Stokes and Shannon Lynn Drake and two sons, John Michael Drake, Jr and John Austin Drake grieving for the loss of their father. Mike was the grandfather of four and great-grandfather of eight.
Mr. Drake had a long, varied and interesting life. He was born in Alabama to Sue Nell Leeman and John Olin Drake. His mother married for the second time when he was an infant to Frank Rempela. Frank was the father Mike knew and loved, and the man who took him on his first Harley ride.
Riding Harley Davidson motorcycles, showing bull mastiffs, beer - any brand, were loves of Mike's life. His lifelong dream of building a log cabin came true in 2004 when he, friends, his father, and his five year-old son finished the house at Chamberlain Cove. Mike must have been born with a socket wrench in his hand because all of his life he could repair bikes, build go-carts, and build early American furniture. His hobbies often took over his life; if he got interested, he soon became an expert, for example , CB radio.
Mike's motorcycles took him him across the United States; he visited 49 states and even took his wife to Sturgis, South Dakota on his motorcycle. He never took his mastiffs to Sturgis but he did take them to breeder shows all over the country where they often won ribbons. Mike loved his life. A memorial service has been planned at Masonic Lodge #38 in Kingston, where Mike has been a member for 50 years; the date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, please make donation to Shriner's or your favorite charity.
